The Curious Case Of October 23rd, 2006

Posted: January 10th, 2009 under Past Market Analysis, Predictions.

Does time run only forwards, or can it run backwards also? Can it run forwards and backwards simultaneously? This is the premise at the core of the movie “The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button” in which Brad Pitt’s character is born a baby but physically old, and gradually gets younger through time.
What makes it interesting is the love affair he has with Cate Blanchett’s character who lives in normal forward running time and as a young girl befriends the old Benjamin. The plot, like Titanic, is predictable, but is sustained by the roller coaster ride of the relationship as the pair age in opposite directions, sometimes they are inseparable, and at others they forget each other completely.

So what does this have to do with the spiral calendar? Take the case of October 23rd, 2006. While the date itself is unremarkable in market terms – just another day of wall-climbing somewhere near the middle of the fifth wave of the 2002-2007 rally – the spirals running backwards and forwards from this date are remarkable. Both sets align with multiple tops and bottoms very closely. The first chart (click charts to enlarge) shows spiral dates running backwards , and the second chart shows them running forward.
The obvious question is what date is the next spiral date, f16, running forwards from Oct 23rd, 2006?
The answer is May 7th, 2009. There are f12,f13,f14,f16,and f17 alignments from past highs and lows in the May 6th to May 9th range so May 7th is a very promising date spiral-wise. Given typical May weakness, I speculate that it might mark the top of the Obama Honeymoon period.

  1. Hi,
Just found your site via Spiral somehow. In trying to understand this analysis I was wondering how you backed into the Oct. 2006 date.
Where did you establish an “anchor” or start date …some high like ’87 ?..then work backward from there? I believe what Chris used was 1929 then went forward to 1987. Also, is there special software required for reverse time analysis? I’m also wondering what good does reverse analysis do…unless it targets a major “anchor” date from which you can pinpoint turning dates..like you have possibly with the October example. But how did you get to that date working backwards?
Thanks for your assistance in understanding this analysis.

    Regards, Liam.

  2. Hi Liam,

Well the 10/23/06 date was a spiral cluster predicted in the period leading up to that date, but there was no apparent turn on the day, and it seemed like a failed cluster at the time. However in the last month I noticed that several highs and lows after that date fit a spiral grid starting on that day. It’s interesting in that an apparent non-turn day can be an anchor day for spirals running forward and backwards.
In thinking of the market as a fractal, this is sort of like the Mandelbrot set patterns that repeat smaller and smaller and disappear into a point.
At some point I will try to do a systematic search for other similar “center” points.

The spiral grid is a custom piece of software I am developing that allows visual exploration of charts with a spiral calendar overlay. Beats looking for nearby dates in spreadsheets! This software is very alpha right now – just barely working and I am continually improving it – so it is not available to anyone else, at least yet.
